Food can quite literally propel you to another time, another country, another culture without even leaving the dinner table, which is why food culture is such an important way that we as people are able to connect and relate to one another. Essentially, Sarawak Heritage Food is influenced by a myriad of cultures, such as Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, Chinese, Indian, and others. In Heritage Central Gallery, various heritage foods from all over Sarawak are available for purchase, such as Ikan Tahai from Lawas, Sarawak Laksa paste, sago, and many more traditional snacks such as Kuih Jala and Kuih Cap.
The traditional food in Sarawak is divided into two types, namely main dishes and dessert. In Sarawak, dessert is also known as ‘kueh’ or ‘kek’. Most of the kueh in Sarawak sound a bit strange, but the taste of each gives its own difference. Sarawak is known for its fusion of traditional delicacies and modern classics that will delight food lovers and first-time visitors. From the famous Kek Lapis Sarawak (uniquely baked with a variety of flavours) to its Kuih Penyaram (made with palm sugar) and Kuih Takir (made with palm sugar & coconut milk) and Kelupis (glutinous rice), the state’s tradition is unrivalled.
